The tarot of the hidden star
Sabat 5: TarotIndependent, 2020
Info and credits

Designed as a 78-card tarot deck for Sabat Magazine, Le Tarot de L’étoile Cachée blends ancient divination practices as well as the instant nature of millennial Witchcraft. Illustrated by Elisa Seitzinger and launched in 2020, the deck draws inspiration from the Tarot de Marseille while encouraging readers to “follow their inner star.” The set includes a guidebook by writer and occult podcaster Pam Grossman, making the project a deeply collaborative creation.
The visual identity and material decisions were crafted to evoke a sense of ritual, depth, and mystery. Printed entirely in lithographic silver on Pop’Set Ultra Black paper, the deck maintains a striking monochrome palette designed so the block of cards appears completely black when stacked. This required a textured, uncoated stock that offered both tactile richness and practical handling.
The packaging elevates the experience further: a rigid, custom-cut box wrapped in foil stamping, ribbon pulls, metallic papers, and detailed embossing. Typography plays a key role too – Larish Alte, chosen for its gothic minimalism and historical associations with medieval witch trials, appears in the booklet and box, while the cards are handwritten. The result is a richly crafted tarot set where every material detail, illustration, and typographic choice deepens the mystical atmosphere and honours the esoteric world it represents.
